Poems and Thoughts by Frank Maurer

Heat Illness and Death. As a small farmer and zoologist, I was always aware of heat.In an average year, extreme heat kills more US citizens Than all hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods combined. Organ failure is a common symptom that leads to death. When the body is exposed to high heat, it attempts to cool down By sweating and redirecting more blood to the skin, Resulting in less oxygen and blood going to the gut. Also, even in dry heat, but with high humidity, It is harder to cool off, because sweat does not Evaporate as well when one is in high humidity. If blood reduction occurs for too long, the gut becomes more Permeable, causing toxins in the gut to begin leaking out. These toxins cause inflammation or blood clots, Which if left untreated, can lead to multiple-organ failure. Heart attacks are another serious heat-problem. When a heart pumps more blood to the skin for cooling, Arteries widen with less blood, which lowers blood pressure. Thus the heart must pump harder to maintain normal pressure. This added stress on the heart may trigger a heart attack or stroke. Another problem when working in high heat is kidney failure. Sweating causes water loss; in one hour, up to 1.5 liters can be lost. Blood plasma, which is about 55% of the total blood volume, If not replenished, causes dehydration and lowers the blood volume. Then, the heart and kidneys must work harder, Maintaining blood pressure, which may lead to fatal kidney failure. In addition, if muscle tissue breaks down releasing Proteins into the blood, these materials can clog kidneys. By now, it is pretty evident what one must do to prevent these issues. One thing to remember for sure, is that high humidity Is far more dangerous than dry heat alone. Throughout my life I have farmed and carried out field work. I am still here at 85, so I must have done something correctly!
